Flightless Goose Lives

At Thanksgiving, families everywhere have turkey on the mind. Gilbert, the flightless goose, thanks you for that.

Although my focus this year has been on Tracks: A Novel in Stories, goose fans everywhere will be happy to know that Gilbert is alive and well.

In fact, earlier this year, our publisher sent me (the author) and Nataliya (the illustrator) on a book tour to Chicago where we presented Flightless Goose to three different schools in Chicago, and to a childrens’ hospital. We even did an interview for a local television station and appeared on the television show “Storytime with Dot!”

On the heels of the Chicago tour, we did a month-long blog tour for Flightless Goose. I appeared on a number of “mommy blogs” in support of Flightless Goose. You can find some of the reviews and interviews from the month-long blog tour at the links below.

Towson Times Explores Tracks

The Towson Times featured the headline “Goodman on ‘Tracks’ with novel built on short stories.” Feature writer Sheila S. Peter wrote in this week’s edition (the online version showed up on Sunday):

Many of us know this Rodgers Forge resident's wonderful first book, "Flightless Goose," for children. Well, now adults can thrill to Eric's work.”

She then went on to mention my NPR radio readings and upcoming Tracks events in the area.

“He'll be at Artscape this coming weekend, July 16 and 17; at Greetings and Readings on July 23; and at the Ivy Bookstore, July 27 at 6:30 p.m.”

New Website for Goodman's Goose

Hey Kids! (And Adults who like to have fun online.) Gilbert the Flightless Goose wants to play — and he has a fun new website where you can join him!

Flightless Goose is a children's story book written by TRACKS author Eric D. Goodman and in stores now.

The new Flightless Goose website at www.FlightlessGoose.com is a great, interactive site that gets visitors involved. Fun, colorful, and animated, the site pulls kids in with the use of music, sound effects, games, storytelling, and animation.

After a few interactive pages introducing the character of Gilbert to children, the website asks you to pick your own favorite activities. You can leave comments, print out pictures from the book to color, or try to draw the characters from the book yourself.

Then, you’re given an opportunity to answer a key question about the book. Weather you know the answer or not, you’ll have fun selecting different options and listening to the sound effects.

Finally, there’s a special offer for parents: two free gifts with the purchase of Flightless Goose for a limited time — between now and the end of the holiday season, or while supplies last. One of the gifts is a free audio CD of the book with sound effects and music that make the already lively book even more exciting!

Check out the new Flightless Goose website now. Gilbert’s waiting for you.

Tracks Author at CityLit Festival

Tracks author Eric D. Goodman is among the authors scheduled to appear at the seventh annual CityLit Festival. Dubbed "a can't miss event on the city's cultural scene," the free, day-long festival is presented by CityLit Project and Enoch Pratt Free Library.

Bestselling author Elizabeth Kostova headlines the event. Kostova, best known for her smash debut The Historian, returns to the New York Times Bestsellers List with The Swan Thieves. Kostova was recently featured on NPR and in the current issue of Poets & Writers magazine, which highlights her fiction seminar in Bulgaria.

Also profiled in the latest P&W, novelist Sam Lipsyte. His newest release, The Ask, has garnered rave reviews including a starred review in Publishers Weekly. Lipsyte will appear as part of the 510 Reading Series program during the festival.

Maryland Poet Laureate Stanley Plumly makes his first CityLit Festival appearance. Plumly's latest collection, Old Heart, was a finalist for the National Book Award. He'll be joined by Laura Shovan, winner of the first Harriss Poetry Prize for her chapbook Mountain, Log, Salt, and Stone.

Actress, daytime Emmy Award nominee, and NAACP Image Award winner Victoria Rowell debuts her first novel, Secrets of a Soap Opera Diva.

The Baltimore Sages reading features local favorites Maud Casey, Michael Downs, Lia Purpura, Rosalia Scalia, Ron Tanner, and Rafael Alvarez. (Note that Rafael Alvarez will also be appearing with Tracks author Eric D. Goodman at the next Lit & Art event at the Watermark Gallery on April 25; more details to come soon!)

Returning favorite features of the festival include Poet's Ink workshops, Poetry by Place readings, the Maryland Humanities Council's "Letters About Literature" ceremony, and the ever-popular busting Literary Marketplace.

The Literary Marketplace features local authors, organizations, workshops, literary journals, and more. Goodman will be there at the Flightless Goose booth, sharing his childrens' book.

The free festival takes place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, at the Enoch Pratt Central Library, 400 Cathedral Street, downtown Baltimore.

More details and a complete schedule can be found on the CityLit website.
